How it works
A Unix timestamp counts the seconds since 1 January 1970 at 00:00:00 UTC. It is how many programs and databases store time.
JavaScript and many APIs use milliseconds instead. This tool treats values of 13 digits or more as milliseconds, and shorter values as seconds.
The date-to-timestamp box reads your date and time as UTC, so the answer is the same wherever you are.
Good to know
India Standard Time is UTC+5:30, so 12:00 IST is 06:30 UTC.
A 32-bit signed timestamp runs out in January 2038, which is why many systems use 64-bit values.
Frequently asked questions
Is it seconds or milliseconds?
If the number has 10 digits it is almost certainly seconds. 13 digits means milliseconds.
Why is my local time different from UTC?
UTC is the reference time. Your local time is UTC plus your time zone’s offset, such as +5:30 in India.
Can timestamps be negative?
Yes. Negative values are dates before 1970.
