How it works
There is no single conversion. Each board or university sets its own rule, and an employer or admission office will usually accept the one printed by your institution.
CBSE’s formula is to multiply the CGPA by 9.5. Many universities simply multiply by 10. VTU uses (CGPA − 0.75) × 10.
Converting back divides by the same multiplier, or reverses the VTU formula.
The formula
CBSE: Percentage = CGPA × 9.5
Multiply by 10: Percentage = CGPA × 10. VTU: Percentage = (CGPA − 0.75) × 10.
A worked example
A CGPA of 8.4 is 79.8% under the CBSE formula, 84% under the ×10 rule and 76.5% under the VTU formula.
Frequently asked questions
Which formula should I use?
Use the one your university or board publishes. If you cannot find one, ask the institution for a certificate that states your percentage.
Why do the results differ?
Because the grading scales and the way marks map to grades differ between institutions, so the multipliers differ too.
Will companies and colleges accept this?
Often they ask for the official equivalence certificate. Check what the form asks for. This calculator gives an estimate only.
